How Booking an Aurora Tour Works
Book ahead, watch the forecast, dress for the cold, and let the guide pick the spot.
Book a few nights ahead
Pick a date on the calendar. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before, so you can book early and move the night if the forecast turns.
Watch the cloud forecast
Clouds decide more than the aurora forecast does. Check the cloud cover for the evening, and keep a second night free in case the first is grey.
Dress for real cold
Wear warm layers, a hat and gloves. Many tours lend thermal suits and boots; the tour page says which.
Meet your pickup
Your voucher names the pickup stop and time in Alta. From there the guide drives to wherever the sky looks clearest.
How an aurora night runs
How an Alta Aurora Night Actually Runs
The part first-timers miss is that you book days ahead, but the route is decided on the night. The guide reads the cloud forecast and the aurora forecast through the afternoon and evening, then drives to wherever the sky is clearest. The small-group chase, for one, runs in any weather, so a cloudy forecast usually changes where you spend the evening, not whether you go.
- Book for your first night — Free cancellation ends 24 hours before the start, before anyone can tell what the sky will do. Booking the first evening of your stay leaves spare nights if the first one is cloudy.
- The afternoon forecast check — Short-range aurora forecasts only look 30 to 90 minutes ahead, and the cloud can change within hours, so guides keep watching both until pickup. The small-group tour runs whatever the weather and is cancelled, with a full refund, only for dangerous weather or roads. Icecube's tour may postpone or cancel at a few hours' notice.
- Dinner, layers, pickup — Eat before you go: the small-group tour recommends it. Pickups are in the evening, from about 19:00 on the Luuso photo tour and after 20:00 on Icecube's, but times vary by date, so check the start time on the booking page. Put on wool layers, and collect a thermal suit if your tour lends one.
- The drive away from town — A chase has no fixed route. Some nights the guide stays close to Alta, on others the drive is much longer, away from the town lights and out from under the cloud. Snowmobile and sleigh evenings are different: they follow a largely set route, whatever the cloud is doing.
- Waiting at the spot — The lights are most often seen between about 20:00 and 02:00, and the sky does not need to be completely clear. Expect long spells standing still in the cold. Camera screens often show the colors more strongly than your eyes do.
- Fire and hot drinks — Whether there is a campfire depends on how far the guide had to drive. The small-group tour sets up a fire when there is time and otherwise serves hot chocolate at short stops; the fire-and-photos tour builds its evening around one, with marshmallows and hot drinks.
- Photos — Two tours include photos: the fire-and-photos tour and the Luuso tour with guide and photos. On the others you take your own, and a tripod helps; the small-group tour does not supply one.
- Back late — The small-group tour is normally back in Alta just after midnight. The fire-and-photos tour can last up to six hours if the sky makes the guide keep driving, so tell the operator if you have a fixed time to be back.

Choosing your aurora night
How to Choose an Alta Northern Lights Tour
Chase or set route, minibus or coach, and the details on the booking page that matter once you are standing in the snow.
Alta sits at the head of the Altafjord in Finnmark, just below the 70th parallel, and its aurora season runs from September to early April. The town is known as the City of the Northern Lights, a name that goes back to the observatory on Haldde mountain that came into use in 1899. The tours on this page leave Alta on most evenings of the season, and they differ more than their photos suggest.
A chase moves, an activity mostly does not
The first choice is between a tour built around finding the lights and an evening activity that hopes to see them. A dedicated aurora chase has no fixed destination. The guide watches the cloud and the forecast and drives to wherever the sky looks clearest, which on some nights is close to town and on others much further out. The Small-Group Guided Northern Lights Tour says as much on its listing: some nights it has to drive quite far, and the distance decides whether there is time to set up a campfire. Our review of the small-group chase →
Snowmobile, sleigh, husky and dinner evenings work the other way. The Northern Lights Night Adventure by Snowmobile follows the old postal road up to the Beskades mountains at the edge of the Finnmark plateau. (our review) The sleigh ride under the northern lights goes through the forest and along the Alta River to a fire shelter for dinner. The Arctic Wilderness Evening at Gargia Lodge is a kennel visit and a stew supper with no dog sledding at all. If the sky is clear where they are, you see the lights. If cloud sits over that valley, the route stays the same. They are good evenings in their own right, with the aurora as a possible extra. Our pages on snowmobile tours, sleigh rides and husky experiences cover each one.
If seeing the aurora is the reason for your trip, book a chase first and keep the activity for another night.
Small group or bus
Price mostly follows group size. On the dates we checked in early November 2026, the small-group tour, capped at 13 guests, was $258 per person, and Icecube of Aurora’s Northern Lights Tour, capped at eight, was $260. With a minibus, you get more of the guide’s time and fewer people around the fire.
The bus tours cost roughly half that. The Northern Lights Adventure Tour with Fire & Free Photos was $129 for 13 November, and Finnmark Adventure’s Northern Lights Bus was $149. Both still move with the weather, but you share the viewpoint with many more people: one reviewer of the fire-and-photos tour counted around 60 guests at two small fires. The small-group tours and bus tours pages set the options side by side, and our guide to which Alta northern lights tour to book sorts ten evening tours by budget, age limit and what each one includes.
Photos, pickup and warm clothes
A good aurora photo needs a tripod and manual camera settings, and most tours expect you to bring both. Two include photos in the price. The fire-and-photos tour gives every guest professional pictures, and Luuso Travel’s Northern Lights Tour with Guide and Photos photographs your evening for you. The small-group tour does not supply tripods. Its listing also warns that pictures often show the colors more strongly than you see them with your own eyes. Northern lights photography tours lists every photo option.
Nearly every tour collects you in Alta, but not always from your door. The fire-and-photos tour uses two fixed points, Løkkeveien 55 and Havneveien 32 near the harbor. The Luuso tour stops at the Thon and Scandic hotels, Flatmoen, Sorrisniva and the cruise dock. On several others the exact pickup point appears when you pick a date, or on your voucher.
Thermal suits come with some tours and not others. The small-group tour lends warm suits and boots, the snowmobile tour supplies thermal suits, shoes, gloves and helmets, and the Luuso tour provides thermal clothing. The two bus tours list none. From December to February, nights in Alta average around −8 to −10 °C, the plateau is colder, and you spend long stretches standing still outside, so pack wool layers even if a suit is included.
Cancellation, and nights with no lights
Every tour on this page can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before it starts. That deadline passes before anyone knows what the night’s sky will do. None of the tours promises a refund if the aurora does not appear. The small-group tour runs whatever the weather and is called off, with a full refund, only when the weather or the roads are dangerous. The Icecube tour may postpone or cancel at a few hours’ notice and refunds in full when it does. Every listing says in its own words that the lights cannot be guaranteed.
The practical answer is to book your chase for the first evening of your stay, so a cloudy night still leaves time for a second try.
When to go
Visit Alta puts the aurora season from September to early April and calls November to March the best months. On GetYourGuide most evening tours run from 4 November this season. The fire-and-photos tour starts on 13 November and the snowmobile tour on 23 November, and snowmobile trails depend on snow. From late November to mid-January the sun does not rise at all, but the lights are most often seen between about 20:00 and 02:00 in any month, and by April the sky no longer gets fully dark. The best time to see the northern lights in Alta goes through the season month by month.
Alta or Tromsø
Alta is roughly six hours from Tromsø by road, or about 40 minutes by air. Visit Alta’s case for the town is that it lies sheltered inland at the head of a fjord, with less precipitation than coastal Tromsø and, it says, more clear nights on average. The precipitation part holds up: Alta Airport records about 438 mm a year against about 1,090 mm in Tromsø. We found no sighting figures that compare the two towns, so treat the clear-nights point as the tourist board’s view. Alta vs Tromsø for northern lights compares tours, transport and weather in more detail.
Cruise passengers and where to stay
Cruise ships berth at Terminalkaia in Alta Havn, on the eastern edge of town by the airport and about 4 km from the center. The Hurtigruten coastal route does not call at Alta. Many winter calls leave in the afternoon, before dark, so an evening tour only fits a call that stays into the evening or overnight. Several tours list the harbor or cruise dock as a pickup, including the small-group tour (choose Alta Havn) and the Luuso tour. Check your ship’s all-aboard time against the start time on the booking page before you pay. Northern lights tours from Alta cruise port has the details.
If you are staying a few nights, choose a hotel near one of the pickup points, since that is where most evenings start. Where to stay in Alta for the northern lights picks hotels with that in mind.

What Guests Say
Ratings and review counts are the tour operators' live figures on GetYourGuide and may shift slightly day to day.
"our guide was very knowledgeable and easy to understand. The trip met all of our expectations and we viewed numerous Northen Lights opportunities."
"Was definitely pricey but the driver and guide took us to three different very remote locations and we saw the northern lights at all three"
"Outstanding tour. Recommend to others. It was a tight fit on the mini bus particularly with all our winter clothing. Everything else was great!"
"Excellent tour. Although I didn’t get to see the lights, the tour was great, just a small group do very personal which I prefer. Got told a lot about the area and also shown some of the surviving churches. Shame the lights didn’t out in an appearance but it had been cloudy all day and you should accept that it’s not guaranteed. I was dropped back at my cruise ship in time which for everyone on a cruise is obviously important."
"what a fabulous time. our guide made sure we saw the lights and boy did we ever."
"Excellent. Our guide River took us to 3 places to see the Northern Lights. He pointed them out to us and tried to help people with camera issues. He took pictures of guests with the lights, as requested. He also offered a snack and hot chocolate. Roger was friendly and knowledgeable, I recommend his tour highly."

Alta Northern Lights Tours FAQ
Short answers to the questions people ask before they book an aurora night in Alta.
No. Every tour we list says the lights cannot be guaranteed, and Visit Alta says the same about clear skies. You need a dark sky, clear enough to see through, and some aurora activity on the same night, and the weather is usually what stops it. A chase tour helps because the guide drives to wherever the cloud is thinnest. Our guide to which tour to book explains what each operator promises.
It is possible. The aurora needs only a dark sky, clear enough to see through, and some activity, not a guide. What a tour adds is transport and someone who knows where to drive when cloud covers Alta. Visit Alta says experienced aurora hunters head for the coast or the Finnmark plateau, and travelers who go on their own recommend a car so they can move when the cloud does. If you drive, remember winter tires and the risk of reindeer and moose on the road.
Only a call that stays into the evening or overnight leaves time for an aurora tour, since many winter calls leave in the afternoon. Ships berth at Terminalkaia, about 4 km from the center. The Small-Group Guided Northern Lights Tour offers Alta Havn as a pickup for cruise guests, and the Northern Lights Tour with Guide and Photos stops at the cruise dock. Check your all-aboard time against the start time on the booking page. See tours from Alta cruise port.
Visit Alta calls November to March the best months, within a season that runs from September to early April. Most aurora tours on GetYourGuide start from 4 November this season, and the snowmobile tour from 23 November. The sun does not rise from late November to mid-January, and by April the nights no longer get fully dark. Our best time guide goes month by month.
From December to February, nights in Alta average around −8 to −10 °C, and the plateau inland is colder. Visit Alta says it rarely drops below −25 °C. Wear wool base layers, a warm hat, mittens and winter boots, because you stand still outside for long periods. Several tours lend thermal suits, including the small-group tour, the snowmobile tour and the Luuso photo tour; the bus tours list none.
It depends on the tour. The small-group tour takes guests aged 12 and over, the Northern Lights Bus and Icecube's small-group tour 10 and over, the ATV hunt 9 and over, and the husky dinner evening 8 and over. Snowmobile passengers must be at least 12. The Northern Lights Tour with Guide and Photos lists no lower age limit and has a child price. Remember these tours run late, often until around midnight.
None of the tours refunds you because the lights did not appear. All of them can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before the start. The small-group tour runs in any weather and refunds in full only if it is called off for dangerous weather or roads; Icecube's tour refunds in full if it postpones or cancels. Booking on your first night leaves room for a second try. See no-lights policies by tour.
Most last three to six hours. The Northern Lights Tour with Guide and Photos runs from 19:00 to midnight, Icecube's tour starts after 20:00, and the small-group tour is normally back in Alta just after midnight. The fire-and-photos tour can run up to six hours depending on the weather. Start times vary by date, so check the start time on the booking page.
Both drive to find clear skies. You pay for the smaller group: $258 for the small-group tour (up to 13) against $129 to $149 for the bus tours on the dates we checked in early November 2026. On a bus you share the fire and the viewpoint with far more people. Compare them on the small-group tours and bus tours pages.
