How to Book an Aurora Tour From Your Ship

Four checks before you pay.

  1. Check your call times

Find your arrival and all-aboard times for Alta. An aurora tour needs an evening or overnight call; ships leaving in the afternoon sail before dark.

  2. Compare with the tour's start time

Pick your date on the booking page to see the start time, and make sure the whole tour ends well before all-aboard.

  3. Choose Alta Cruise Dock as pickup

Select the cruise dock in the pickup list so the bus collects you at the ship and brings you back there.

  4. Dress for a night outside

Thermal clothing is provided on this tour, but bring a hat, gloves and warm layers underneath. You will spend a lot of the night standing still.

Can You Fit an Aurora Tour Into Your Port Call?

Whether you can join an aurora tour from your ship depends on one thing: is the ship still in Alta after dark? If you have an evening or overnight call, the Northern Lights Tour with Guide and Photos lists Alta Cruise Dock as a pickup and drop-off point, runs from 19:00 to midnight according to the operator, and was $193 per person on 6 November 2026. If your ship sails in the afternoon, book a daytime trip: the Altafjord Whale Watching in a Heated Boat starts about 500 m from the cruise terminal. Our Luuso Travel tour review →

Where cruise ships dock in Alta

Cruise calls in Alta are listed at Terminalkaia, the main quay of Alta Havn, on Havneveien at the eastern edge of town next to the airport. The center is about 4 km away. Walking takes 40 to 50 minutes and includes an uphill stretch, so on an icy winter day most people take the cruise line’s shuttle or the city bus: lines 42, 43, 45 and 110 run to town in about 20 minutes from a stop roughly 10 minutes’ walk from the port. The port was not designed with large numbers of passengers in mind, so expect a working harbor more than a cruise terminal. Ask your cruise line whether your ship will dock or anchor, as the port does not say.

If you are traveling on the Hurtigruten Coastal Express, note that it does not call at Alta: the route between Tromsø and Kirkenes stops at Hammerfest and other ports, but not here. Hurtigruten’s expedition-style ships do make occasional cruise calls.

Does your call leave time after dark?

Aurora is usually seen best between about 20:00 and 02:00. In November full darkness begins at about 17:00 to 18:00, and from late November to mid-January the sun does not rise at all, though there is still some twilight around midday. A ship that leaves at 14:00 sails before dark, and that rules out an evening aurora tour.

That is a real issue in winter. Port schedules for 2026 to 2027 show Hurtigruten’s Finnmarken on 7 November and Trollfjord on 14 November both in port from 08:00 to 14:00. Other calls are later or overnight: Nieuw Statendam is listed overnight from 14 to 15 November, Hanseatic Nature until 22:00 on 17 November, Majestic Princess until 01:00 on 11 and 25 March, and Saga’s Spirit of Discovery and Ambassador’s Ambience and Ambition overnight in March. Viking Libra is listed with overnight calls in late January, February and March. Schedules change, so confirm your own times with your cruise line before you book anything.

Even a late call needs some arithmetic. A ship that leaves at 22:00 is too early for a tour that runs from 19:00 to midnight. If you have an overnight call, Life in Norway notes you may also be able to watch from the ship.

The aurora tours that collect cruise guests

Check your ship’s all-aboard time against the tour’s start time on the booking page for every one of these. Start times show when you pick a date.

The Luuso Travel tour is our pick for an evening call. The bus is capped at 25 guests, thermal clothing is provided, there are hot drinks and snacks, and you get photos of your evening. It accepts all ages. It has 5.0, but from only 6 reviews.

The Small-Group Guided Northern Lights Tour tells cruise passengers to choose Alta Havn as the pickup, where the guide waits with a minibus in front of the blue Alta Havn building. Groups go up to 13, warm suits and boots are lent, and it runs about four hours, usually ending just after midnight. It was $258 on 4 November 2026, with 4.6 from 152 reviews, and one cruise guest wrote that they were dropped back at the ship in time. Children under 12 cannot join. Our review →

The Northern Lights Hunt by ATV includes transport from the harbor, and Finnmark Adventure’s listing describes a Back-to-Ship Guarantee for cruise guests. It runs five hours, with a 30-minute drive to Kviby, two guests per ATV and a car licence needed to drive. It was $235 on 5 November, with 4.7 from 32 reviews. Our review →

The Northern Lights Bus from the same company carries the same back-to-ship wording, and reviewers were picked up at the cruise port. At about 3.5 hours it is shorter than the others, and at $149 on 4 November it costs less. It takes no children under 10. Our review →

These guarantees are the operators’ own wording. Your booking terms on GetYourGuide give free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and none of the tours refunds you if the sky is cloudy.

If your ship leaves in the afternoon

Book a daytime trip. The Altafjord whale watching boat leaves from Havneveien 24, about 500 m from the cruise terminal, and the operator says it returns to the harbor on time for 14:00 departures. It runs about 3.5 hours with heated indoor seating, coffee, tea and cookies. The operator says herring arrive in the fjord between November and January, followed by orcas and humpback whales, but sightings are not guaranteed. It was $242 on 6 November 2026, with 4.9 from 101 reviews. Our review →

For a short stop, the Reindeer, a Carrier of Sámi Culture visit at Sami Siida lasts one hour, and you feed reindeer and hear about Sámi reindeer herding. It was $85 on 8 November, with 4.8 from 312 reviews. No pickup is listed, so plan a taxi or ask your cruise line about transport. Our review →

In town, the Northern Lights Cathedral is open Monday to Friday from 11:00 to 13:00 in winter. The outdoor rock art area at the Alta Museum closes for winter.

"The Driver was excellent as he was also our guide. A local with a very interesting background. We had an unexpected coffee and snack experience in a local home. It was great value and highly recommend. Oh, did I mention the northern lights? They were great despite the fact the full moon light made it challenging."

GetYourGuide traveler

"A great experience and well worth the price paid. Our bus driver/guide was very knowledgeable and knew where to take us to see the Northern Lights."
