How a Small-Group Aurora Night Works
From booking to the drive back into town.
Book an early night of your stay
Take your first or second evening in Alta, so a cloudy night still leaves you a spare one. Free cancellation runs to 24 hours before the start.
Choose your pickup point
The pickup points in Alta appear when you pick a date. Cruise guests are asked to choose Alta Havn, where the guide waits with the minibus.
Eat first and dress in wool
The operator suggests having dinner before you leave and wearing warm wool layers. Warm suits and boots are there to borrow on top.
Follow the guide and the clouds
Some nights the lights are close to town, other nights the minibus drives a long way. Depending on the distance you get a campfire camp or hot chocolate at a short stop.

Choosing
Which Small-Group Tour to Book
For a first aurora night in Alta, book the Small-Group Guided Northern Lights Tour. It takes up to 13 guests in a minibus, picks you up in Alta, lends you warm suits and boots, and runs about four hours, normally getting back to the center just after midnight. It was $258 per person on the first November dates we checked (from 4 November 2026), and with 152 reviews at 4.6 it has more reviews than any other aurora tour sold for Alta on GetYourGuide. Our review →
Pick one of the 8-guest tours if you want an even smaller group, and a bus if the budget matters more than the size of the group.
What a smaller group changes
The main thing you are paying for is freedom of movement. Clouds are usually what stands between you and the aurora, and Visit Alta’s own advice is that a guided hunt that drives to the clearest sky gives you the best odds. A minibus or a car can turn around on a side road, try another valley, or move a few hundred meters to get out of a patch of cloud. The Alta Adventure tour says it sometimes drives quite far and sometimes finds the lights close to town, and the distance decides whether you get a campfire camp or hot chocolate at a short stop. One recent guest wrote that the guide took them to three remote spots and they saw the lights at all three.
Then there is what happens when you stop. With a dozen people you all get space at the fire and the guide has time for your camera questions. On the big-bus tours, one review describes about 60 people around two small fires. Our bus tours page covers that side fairly.
The trade-offs are real too. Several guests found the minibus a tight fit once everyone was in winter clothing, and the price is about $110 to $130 more per person than the two bus tours ($149 and $129 on their first dates).
Up to 13 or up to 8
Two tours keep the group to eight. The Northern Lights Tour by Icecube of Aurora takes 2 to 8 guests by car, picks you up anywhere in Alta and starts after 20:00, when the operator says the chances improve toward midnight. It runs about three hours with hot drinks and biscuits, was $260 per person on 4 November 2026, and has 4.4 from 8 reviews. Warm suits are not listed, and children under 10 cannot join. If the forecast looks bad, the operator may suggest another date, and a tour it cancels is refunded in full. Our review →
The Northern Lights Hunt and Arctic Animals Adventure from Finnmark Adventure also caps each car at eight. It starts at a farm with llamas, alpacas, woolly pigs and horses, then heads out to chase the lights with Norwegian treats, hot drinks and a guide who helps you get the shot. It was $268 per person on 5 November 2026 and has 4.3 from 7 reviews. It suits couples and families who want something to do while the sky gets dark, but it is not for anyone with animal allergies. Eight and seven reviews are not many. One cloudy night can move those scores, so read them as early signs. The 13-guest tour has the longer track record.
When a bigger group makes sense
The Northern Lights Hunt by ATV is for people who want an activity as well as the sky. Groups go up to 16, two guests share each ATV, and the driver needs a valid car licence. After a 30-minute drive to Kviby on the coast you get overalls, a helmet and gloves, then ride out with the guide. It runs five hours, was $235 on 5 November 2026 and has 4.7 from 32 reviews. Children under 9 cannot join. Our review →
The Northern Lights Tour with Guide and Photos from Luuso Travel is a bus, but a modest one: the operator caps it at 25 guests. It runs from 19:00 to midnight, includes thermal clothing and photos of your evening, welcomes children of all ages, and was $193 on 6 November 2026. It has 5.0, but from only 6 reviews. Our review →
Before you book
Check ages first. The 13-guest tour does not take children under 12, the Icecube car tour none under 10, while the Luuso bus takes all ages. Families with younger children should look at the Luuso bus.
Check the clothing. Warm suits are included or lent on the Alta Adventure tour, the ATV night and the Luuso bus. They are not listed on the two 8-guest tours, so bring your own warmest layers there. In January the average low at Alta Airport is about -10 °C, and you will spend a lot of the night standing still.
Know what happens if the sky stays cloudy. None of these tours refunds you because the lights did not appear. The Alta Adventure tour runs whatever the weather and is cancelled, with a full refund, only if the weather or roads are dangerous. Every tour here has free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Finally, book your aurora night early in your stay. The season runs from September to early April and Visit Alta calls November to March the best months, but no night is guaranteed, and a second evening is the best insurance. Our guide to the best time to see the northern lights in Alta covers the dark hours by month, and the where to stay page lists hotels near the pickup points. Still choosing between tour types? What Guests Say About the Small-Group Tour
Ratings and review counts are the tour operators' live figures on GetYourGuide and may shift slightly day to day.
"our guide was very knowledgeable and easy to understand. The trip met all of our expectations and we viewed numerous Northen Lights opportunities."
"Was definitely pricey but the driver and guide took us to three different very remote locations and we saw the northern lights at all three"
"Outstanding tour. Recommend to others. It was a tight fit on the mini bus particularly with all our winter clothing. Everything else was great!"
"Excellent tour. Although I didn’t get to see the lights, the tour was great, just a small group do very personal which I prefer. Got told a lot about the area and also shown some of the surviving churches. Shame the lights didn’t out in an appearance but it had been cloudy all day and you should accept that it’s not guaranteed. I was dropped back at my cruise ship in time which for everyone on a cruise is obviously important."
"what a fabulous time. our guide made sure we saw the lights and boy did we ever."
"Excellent. Our guide River took us to 3 places to see the Northern Lights. He pointed them out to us and tried to help people with camera issues. He took pictures of guests with the lights, as requested. He also offered a snack and hot chocolate. Roger was friendly and knowledgeable, I recommend his tour highly."
