About This Experience

Amazing Aurora, run by the bus company Karlsøy Buss, takes a busload out of Alta for an evening of up to six hours with no fixed route. Two guides watch live weather and sky conditions and head for whichever area looks clearest, which on a cloudy night can mean about an hour on the road before the first stop. Pickup and drop-off are at two addresses in town, Løkkeveien 55 and Havneveien 32.

At the viewing spot the guides light a campfire, hand out cookies and hot chocolate, tea or coffee, and pass round marshmallows to roast while everyone watches the sky. They explain the physics as you wait: solar wind, the Kp index and why most nights glow green while a few show reds and purples. Every guest gets professional photos taken under the lights, free to download, and the bus has a toilet on board for the longer drives.

This is the lower-priced, bigger-group way to chase the aurora from Alta. It suits travelers who want a campfire stop and photos without paying small-group rates, and cruise passengers: the operator asks anyone with a fixed return time, such as a ship departure, to say so in advance so the route can be planned around it. On quieter dates the tour runs in a smaller vehicle instead of the big bus. Check your ship’s all-aboard time against the start time on the booking page before you book.

The lights cannot be guaranteed, and the length and route of the night depend on the weather and aurora activity, up to the six-hour maximum. No thermal suits are listed, so you need your own winter clothing for standing outside in temperatures well below freezing for an hour or two at a stop.

Reviewers often arrived by cruise ship under heavy cloud and were driven to a clear sky, and many praise the two guides, the fire and the free photos. The criticism comes from the busy nights: one reviewer counted around 60 people sharing two small fire burners, with a late start and a meeting point that was hard to find, and another said they waited a long time in the cold with no photos sent afterward. On fully overcast nights some groups moved location and still saw nothing.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.8/5 by 41 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

Unfortunately Mother Nature forgot to open the clouds so we didn’t get to see any of the northern lights. However Dominica and Tomas were great in giving us information and for continually chasing the sky in the hope that we would be lucky. On a clear night would be a superb experience.

Excellent excursion, it was very cloudy on that evening, yet they can found a clear spot for aurora viewing.

We arrived in Alta on a cruise ship during a period of heavy cloud, Thomas and Dominica remotely monitor several locations so knew where to head, approximately 1hr journey to a perfect viewpoint with no cloud and perfectly clear skies we had great views of the Northern lights. We were provided with hot chocolate, marshmallows and cookies all enjoyed around a fire pit. They took professional photos which were free to download. The guys were brilliant and so knowledgeable. Amazing experience, great value and highly recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tour suitable for cruise passengers?

Many reviewers joined from a cruise ship. The operator asks you to tell them in advance if you have a fixed return time, and says the route will be planned so you are back in time; still check your ship’s all-aboard time against the start time on the booking page.

How big is the group?

The listing gives no cap. It runs as a big bus, or a smaller vehicle when few people book, and one reviewer counted around 60 guests on a busy night.

Are the photos really free?

Yes, professional photos of guests under the lights are included in the price, and reviewers describe downloading them afterward. One reviewer said they did not receive theirs, so ask the guides how the photos will be shared.

What if the sky is cloudy?

The guides track cloud and drive to wherever the sky looks clearest, sometimes about an hour away, but the aurora cannot be guaranteed and there is no refund if it stays hidden. You can cancel free up to 24 hours before.

Do they provide warm clothing?

No thermal suits are listed. Bring winter clothing for temperatures well below freezing; the fire and hot drinks help, but you may stand outside for an hour or two.

Why is it up to 6 hours long?

The route and length depend on the weather and aurora activity. The itinerary shows about an hour on the bus plus about four hours guided, and on clear nights the evening can end sooner.
