About This Experience
Æventyr’s night snowmobile trip combines about two hours of riding with a search for the aurora, in an evening of around four hours. After pickup in Alta, the group follows the old postal road up to the edge of Finnmarksvidda, the high plateau inland, to a mountain area well away from the town’s lights. If the sky is clear and the aurora is active, you see it over open snow; on other nights it is a dark Arctic sky full of stars.
No snowmobile experience is needed. You get a thorough safety talk and driving instruction first, then ride in pairs, one driving and one as passenger, with the chance to swap seats during the trip. Norwegian rules require everyone to drive in a convoy behind the guide, and the speed is set to the group’s experience. Thermal suits, shoes, gloves and helmets are provided, and coffee, tea and snacks are served on the way.
Drivers need a valid B-class (car) driving license and must show it before riding. Guests without one can ride as passengers from age 12. The listing rules out people over 70, people over 130 kg (287 lbs), pregnant travelers and anyone with back problems or mobility impairments, and the group is capped at 17.
The aurora is a bonus here, not a promise: the operator’s own wording is that if you are lucky you will see it. Riding depends on snow on the marked trails, which is why bookable dates in 2026 start in late November. Weather can turn rough on the plateau.
Reviewers who got clear skies describe stopping along the way to watch the lights and reaching the plateau under stars, planets and even shooting stars. Others had cloud or a snowstorm and no aurora, yet several still enjoyed the ride, the cabin base and the hot drinks. A couple of four-star reviews note that night conditions made the driving harder, while praising the well-organized pickup and transport.

Perfect experience all round! We were lucky enough to have amazing conditions to view the Northern lights during our trip and Vicky was a brilliant guide. We have some wonderful memories and photos to look back on. Would highly recommend.

Got to snowmobile in a snowstorm! Our guide was willing to pick us up and coordinate transportation, which we really appreciated. Back at the lodge, they shared a black currant drink with us and we had a very nice time, although no Northern lights in the snowstorm (but we thought the snowstorm enhanced the experience)

No. You get a safety introduction and driving instruction before the trip, ride two to a snowmobile, and follow the guide in a convoy at a pace set for the group.

You still get the snowmobile ride; the lights are a bonus the operator does not promise. There is no refund for a cloudy sky, but you can cancel free up to 24 hours before.
When does the season start?
It depends on snow on the marked trails. On GetYourGuide the first 2026 date is 23 November.
