About This Experience

Finnmark Adventure is a small Alta company, and this is its straightforward evening aurora hunt: about three and a half hours in a heated bus with local guides, pickup included. There is no fixed route or single viewing point. The guides follow the cloud and the forecasts through the evening, sometimes staying close to town and sometimes heading further into the countryside, and stop whenever the sky looks promising.

At each stop you step outside to look, take photos or just watch, then warm up again on the bus. Along the way there is a short aurora presentation on how activity on the Sun creates the lights and why they move and change color, alongside Sami and other Arctic stories about them. Warm drinks and Arctic snacks are served during the evening, though the listing does not allow food and drink inside the vehicle. When six or fewer guests book, the tour runs by car instead of the bus.

It suits travelers who want a lower-priced, no-fuss way to look for the aurora with people who live in the area, and cruise guests in particular: Finnmark Adventure says it coordinates departure and return times with each ship’s schedule and offers a Back-to-Ship Guarantee. Check your ship’s all-aboard time against the tour’s start time on the booking page anyway. Children under 10 cannot join, and the listing gives guides in Norwegian, English and German.

The operator says plainly that it never promises the northern lights, and there is no refund if they do not appear. Photography assistance is not included, so set up your camera before you go, and you need your own warm jacket, hat and gloves because no thermal clothing is provided.

Reviewers often boarded at the Alta cruise port in rain or cloud and were driven to a clear patch of sky, and several describe the best display coming on the drive back, when the bus pulled over by the road for everyone to get out. Others travelled to two locations and saw nothing, but still enjoyed the drive into the mountains and the stories. The main complaint in a lower rating was a slow start at the meeting point, where the guide did not approach a waiting group.

Both our guide and our bus driver did a fantastic job. It was raining at the port when we boarded the bus, so we didn’t expect to see anything. But they took us to a place where the sky was clear and we saw beautiful northern lights. The best display occurred while we were driving back, and they pulled the bus over where we could get out and watch the show! It was spectacular. Both ladies deserve high marks for the job they did last night!

We had a wonderful evening searching for the Northern Lights with our guide. He knew a lot of good spots to go and search. We were pretty lucky early on in the evening as a few auroras popped up and gave us a show. Unfortunately the clouds kind of took over so we didn’t see much after the halfway point but we cant control the weather. I would definitely recommend taking this tour (and bring a tripod for your phone/camera for long exposures).
