Where to Stay in Alta for the Northern Lights

Sleep on the route the aurora tours collect from.

  • Centre to Alta Airport 7–8 Min
  • River valley to centre 8–11 Min

The Northern Lights Cathedral in central Alta, a short walk from the town-centre hotels

Stay in Alta’s town centre if you plan to book aurora tours: Thon Hotel Alta and Scandic Alta are named pickup stops, Canyon Hotell is where two evening tours start, and you can walk to dinner. For a quieter base with less town light, the Alta river valley has cabins, a dome with a transparent roof and forest suites 8 to 11 minutes away. The splurge is a forest cottage in the Gargia valley or a night in the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, 15 to 21 minutes out. The airport is only 7 minutes from the centre, so you only need to sleep beside it for a very early flight. None of these hotels can promise the lights, and outside the centre you should check that your tour will collect you.

Three picks, one per style of trip

A good-value cabin by the river, a central hotel on the pickup route, and a splurge in forest cottages outside town. Each price is the lowest nightly room rate Booking.com showed for 13–14 February 2027, two adults, with taxes and fees included.

Luuso Travel’s Northern Lights Tour with Guide and Photos collects at Thon Hotel Alta, Scandic Alta, Flatmoen, Sorrisniva and the Alta cruise dock. Alta Adventure’s whale-watching and plateau snowmobile trips list Thon, Scandic, Alta Havn and Alta Airport, and its small-group aurora tour shows its pickup points when you choose a date. Æventyr’s Northern Lights ATV safari meets at Canyon Hotell, and its evening snowshoe hike leaves from the same address, Markedsgata 6.

Alta centre: on the pickup route

The centre suits most aurora visitors. Tours collect here, the Northern Lights Cathedral is a short walk away, and you can eat out without a car. The trade-off is town light: you will not see much of a faint display from the street, but every tour drives you out of town anyway.

Thon Hotel Alta (mid-range, 8.6 from 1,143 Booking.com reviews) is about 250 yards from downtown near the Markedsgata pedestrian street, with breakfast in the rate shown and a parking garage with EV charging; minimum check-in age 18. Scandic Alta (mid-range, 7.9 from 2,180) is the cheaper central option at $164 for a twin on 13 February, with breakfast extra on the lowest rate. Canyon Hotell (upper, 8.2 from 2,611) is on Markedsgata itself, $240 that night with breakfast; minimum age 18. See all stays in central Alta.

Alta river valley: cabins ten minutes out

South of the centre, along the Alta river, the stays are cabins, a dome and lodges, all 8 to 11 minutes from town. It is quieter and darker than the centre. Only Flatmoen is a named pickup stop, and only on Luuso’s tour, so plan on a car or a taxi to reach other pickups.

Alta River Camping (budget, 8.4 from 2,025 reviews) has cabins and rooms by the river with free parking; the $86 February rate is a cabin, while the 4 December rate was a room with a shared bathroom. GLØD Aurora Canvas Dome (upper, 9.6 from 123) is a tent in the pine forest whose listing says half the walls and roof are transparent, with a fireplace and breakfast included, at $464; there is no running water in the dome. Flatmoen Natur Lodge (upper, 9.3 from 267) has a hot tub and free parking, $425 in February with breakfast about $22 per person extra. Forest Suites by Holmen Husky (luxury, 9.8 from 114) are private suites on a family husky farm, $1,023 for its one suite type. See all stays near the Alta river.

Gargia and Sorrisniva: lodges away from town lights

The lodges further up the valley are the splurge end, 15 to 21 minutes from the centre and well away from the town’s lights. You will want a car, and you should confirm pickup with your tour before you book.

Trasti & Trine Boutique Hotel (luxury, 9.5 from 359) is a set of forest cottages in the Gargia valley with ski and hiking trails from the door and breakfast in the rate shown. The $675 February rate is a four-bedroom cottage, the only type left; a one-bedroom cottage was $482 on 4 December.

The Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel

Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel (luxury, 9.1 from 155) is rebuilt from snow and ice on the Alta river every winter, with reindeer-skin beds, sleeping bags, a sauna and hot tubs. Its own site says it is open every year from 20 December to 31 March, and Booking.com showed no availability for 4–5 December. An ice room was $505 on a non-refundable rate or $532 refundable for 13–14 February; minimum check-in age 18. Sorrisniva is a pickup stop on Luuso’s aurora tour.

East of town, Alten Lodge (mid-range, 9.4 from 105) has family rooms with private entrances and a sauna, $247, but it is 25 minutes from the centre and the minimum check-in age is 25. See all stays around Gargia.

Bossekop: little reason to choose it

Bossekop is the western end of town, 3 minutes from the centre. Its one listing, Best Western Hotel Alta (mid-range), has breakfast and free parking at $170, but only four reviews so far. See all stays in Bossekop.

Alta Airport and Elvebakken: for early flights

Alta Airport sits on the eastern edge of town, 7 to 8 minutes from the centre, and the cruise port, Alta Havn, is beside it. With the centre that close, you only need an airport bed for a very early departure or a late arrival.

Airport Central Apartment (mid-range, 9.0 from 56) is a private-host one-bedroom 0.6 miles from the terminal, with a kitchenette and free parking, at $184; minimum check-in age 18. Alta Adventure’s whale and snowmobile trips list Alta Airport as a pickup. If you land in the evening, a taxi to the centre takes about 10 minutes and you are on the pickup route for the next night’s tour. See all stays near Alta Airport.

Should you split the stay?

Everything on this page is within 30 minutes of the centre, so a split is easy if you want two kinds of night. A sensible pattern is two nights in the centre for guided tours with pickup, then one or two nights at a river-valley or Gargia lodge to watch the sky away from town lights, with a car. If you want the igloo hotel, one night of it fits easily into a split. With three nights or fewer, a single base saves packing and leaves your evenings for the aurora. Finish in the centre or at the airport if your flight is early.

All five areas on one map

The map opens on Alta town: the river valley lodges lie to the south, Gargia and Sorrisniva further up the valley, and the airport to the east. Pick your dates in the map for live prices.

Booking tips

Book the tour first, then the room. Every aurora tour on this site has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, while the cheapest room rates are often non-refundable. Most evening tours run from early November and some later in the month, and the igloo hotel opens on 20 December, so check both calendars before you fix your dates.

You don’t need a car if you stay in the centre: the tours collect you. Outside the centre you probably do, unless your hotel is a named stop on your tour, as Flatmoen and Sorrisniva are on Luuso’s. Winter roads mean snow, dark afternoons and reindeer on the road, and rental cars come with winter tyres as standard.

Cruise passengers: ships dock at Alta Havn, about 4 km from the centre. Alta Adventure tells cruise guests to choose Alta Havn as the pickup on the small-group tour; our cruise port guide covers the other tours that collect there.

Read on each listing on 3 November 2026. Booking.com showed every rate with taxes and fees included, and no Norwegian listing here adds a resort fee. Thon, Scandic and Canyon don’t show a parking price, so ask the hotel; one Scandic guest mentions paying through EasyPark. A $425 night at Flatmoen is about $469 with breakfast for two, and Holmen’s $1,023 suite about $1,063 (our arithmetic).

To choose a tour, start with the tour comparison or the small-group tours. Our review of the small-group tour covers the evening this page’s booking block sells, and seeing the lights without a tour helps if you are staying out of town with a car.
